Review: City Color Contour Effects

8:50 PM

I am a makeup amateur. I wanted to learn the ropes of contouring so I am starting with matte contour powders. Since I don't know where to get the best priced Anastasia Beverlyhills Contour Kit in the Philippines (online sellers jack the price up), I settled for City Color Contour Effects for practice.

This would have been a perfect palette if not for the shimmery white highlighter (I want a matte white contour powder).

What: Matte and shimmer contour powder
Price: I bought this for Php 255 on sale (now back to Php 395 online). Sells for Php 700 in Robinson's Metro East.

Packaging

The 3 powder palettes are housed in a matte cardboard packaging with a magnetic closure. It's very lightweight and good for travelling however, I don't bring this around since I don't have the time to contour in public and I use my Elf Bronze and Blush duo in St. Lucia for a quick contour touch up. I have no qualms with the packaging as it is standard yet useful.

Performance

When I got this, I immediately swatched the powders on the back of my hand. I am VERY surprised with the texture! The powders feel very smooth and buttery to touch (not gritty and chalky). They are finely milled and well-pressed on the palette. Because of this, I knew I should only apply this with a light hand otherwise my face would look muddy. I find it nice that it comes with a concise instruction on how to use it. Very ideal for beginners.

This powder contour kit is long lasting (4-5 hours no retouch). It also sets well on the face. The best way to apply this is NOT by streaking the colors on your face like the picture on the cardboard, otherwise it would be hard to blend. Once you tap your brush on the powder, tap the excess lightly then blend the color on your face.

**Will upload contour pictures soon**

Verdict

3.75/5

Pros
Affordable
Not chalky. Very blendable.
Lightweight packaging. Magnetic closure.
Lasts about 4-5 hours with slight sweating.

Cons
Shimmery white powder highlight (better if matte)
Contains parabens and mineral oil.
Not widely available in the Philippines

I like this contour kit. I would love to buy this again but I am not afraid to try other contour kits (I'm talking to you Anastasia Beverlyhills powder contour kit). In the meantime, I will practice cream contouring as well using LA Girl Pro Conceal concealers.
